Happy Sunday and buckle up, your favorite gluten-free allergy mama is returning to share what I have been consuming. This month I am reflecting on May and June. Full of shows, movies, and books. Enjoy :)
Shows
3 Body Problem(Netflix)
When I first started watching this show I had high hopes. By episode 3 It soon faded away. I finished it in the hopes that it would redeem itself and for me, it fell pretty flat. I believe the show is based on a book, so this might be a case of the book is probably better. Although there were certain elements of the show I did enjoy, the fantasy, the gameplay aspect, dystopian take so if you enjoy those things, maybe check it out for yourself. But hit me up after the ep. 3 or 4 to let me know what you're thinking.
New Girl(hulu) - Rewatch of courseeee :)
I think New Girl might be my most-watched series, probably having seen it from start to finish 10 times. And most of my friends in college watched it/played it in the background anytime we hung out together. I took a break from it probably for the past 4 yours BUT now it feels like its time to reignite it as my comfort show. My love for it is neverending and it still some of the funniest writing to me.
Love Island - US(Peacock) and UK(ITVX) Thank you to both my friends Seren and Jordyn for letting me use their subscriptions, love you. <3
This season for both is giving me all the reality TV I need. Both are better and messier than I feel like they have been for years. In the UK the characters are continuous, this season Uma, Mimii, Matilda, and Grace are my favs. On the US, JaNa, Serena, and Liv are my favs. All the boys are okay as usual haha.
Bridgerton(Netflix)
Sorry, I don’t know if I have told you but I am such a stan of Bridgerton. Consider this my formal announcement. This season did it for me in a different way compared to the past 2 but still offered as much excitement as past ones. I think Penelope and Colin did a great job overall despite this season feeling a little all over the place regarding showcasing their love story. For me, Colin should have been on his hands and knees begging for most of the season. Although I do think he did grovel he still moved in ways where he acted like the prize, which I was not a fan of. But this season gave me all the feels and squeals I needed and I am already eager for the next season.
Your Honor(Netflix)
Just got into season 2 of this show. One of my coworkers at my last job used to always talk to me about this show. He was in his 70s but an avid TV watcher and we used to always chat about TV and suggest shows to one another, this was one he suggested. It is grungey, intense, high-tension, and a little comical. I love Bryan Cranston so he is what keeps me around but I can also tell that he directed the show. I see his eye. So take that as you will.
Love is Blind: Brazil(Netflix)
I watched the first two seasons of this show and didn't realize they had released more. I have been catching up and like to see the similarities to that of the US and the many differences. I feel like in Brazil not only do they take sexual chemistry and passion so much more seriously and intensely. The first kiss that the couple share speaks for itself. I enjoy the concept/ reality show Love is Blind and in Brazil, it continues to shine.
Movies
The Holdovers(Prime)
Fred and I watched this movie together and both loved it very much. It felt like Nostalgia Central taking place in the Midwest in the 1970s. The type of movie I had to hug Fred after and had me clutching my chest. Paul Giamatti shines on screen in ways I did not expect. Having his usual grumpy and distant demeanor, his character had me laughing out loud, crying over, and somehow could see myself in. Da’vine Joy was full of solace, with her character going through a lot of familial ups and downs. But her vibrancy was one to see on the screen. This movie is one of my favorites I have seen in a while and one that I now consider a Christmas staple.
Challengers(In Theaters)
GIRL, I hope by now you’ve seen this. If not go see it right Neow, IMMEDIATELY. Luca Guadagnino knew what he was doing with this one. I’ve seen it three times now. Can’t wait for it to be on streaming. It is juicy, bright, sensual, satisfying, and the type of movie that scratches a mental itch. Report back once you’ve watched.
Dr. No(Prime)
Recently got to film the first podcast that I’ve ever participated in. It was so much fun and such a good convo about James Bond and sexy interior design. I am pretty familiar with James Bond despite only seeing four of the twenty-seven movies and two of the six that are out in the franchise. I watched this to prepare for the podcast. It was the first of the franchise and came out in 1962. It is the movie that captured the famous line, “The names Bond, James Bond”. The film was camp, full of loopholes, racist tendencies, and sexy interiors. It was fascinating to see and to think of how we got from that to the most recent bond, Daniel Craig. I go back and forth on whether the franchise should be put to rest. Or if there is still an opportunity to breathe some new life into it. Only time will tell, maybe it has 27 more movies in there.
Monkey Man(Prime)
Finally got to watch this movie with my boy Dev Patel. WOWZERS was a funky, artistic, political, violent, and powerful directing debut. Also, Dev looked fine as hell in this.
Dune Part Two(In Theaters)
Heeee Yaaaa Na He Yaaaaa. Song has been in my head for a damn while. This movie was one of a kindddd. Outside of the cult following surrounding the film, the second film was one of my favorite sequels I’ve seen. I think not only were the visuals, set, and fashion stunning. It makes me kind of want to read the books but the length intimidates me. So the movies will work for now!
Books
Ornament is Not A Crime by Rebecca L. Gross
This book was a random come across in the library that I thought would house some good colorful inspiration. The book focused on Post Modern Interiors mostly around Europe. The book I believe stands in pure opposition to Ornament and Crime an essay written by Adolf Loos in 1913. Focusing on colorful interiors and ornament, the book has some amazing photography and serves as a foreground for a postmodern interior. Outside of this, I found that the writeups in the book outlined the project details but did not offer much insight into the history, or thinking behind postmodernism, which I think would made me appreciate the book more. But outside of that, I love a funky more nontraditional but still modern space, so I enjoyed flipping through it.
Cleo and Frankenstein By Coco Mellors
I do want to admit that I dnf-ed(did not finish) this book. This book follows Cleo and Frank who are in an untraditional, chaotic, and toxic relationship. I am fairly new to literary fiction so I don’t have much to compare this book to. Although I enjoyed the beginning and middle of this book I found that towards the end it dragged and the story seemed to lose its steam. Not sure if this is the book for me, part of me wants to finish it and part of me likes the idea of guessing how it might end, that to me adds something to the plot.
I’m Not A Fan by Sheena Patel
I just started this book and am already such a big fan, I’ll let you know by the end if the title is more suitable.
Podcasts
The Broski Report
Brittany Broski has no right to be this funny. My favorite thing about this unhinged podcast is that she records it completely alone. If you listen to an ep, you will see how much this adds to the comedy.
Music
Hardstone Psycho - Don Toliver
This album blends so well together and has been hype but also pretty soothing to me on the daily. I am fairly new to Don Tolly but a big fan so far. The song with Kodak, BROTHER STONE, is an absolute banger as well as ATTITUDE with Charlie Wilson <3. Highly recommend!
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan
We need a Femininomenon! This album has had me feeling like a teenager in the best ways. It is poppy, belt-worthy, and has dance rhythms and beats. Also, baby girl can sing a damn ballad. I am late to this fabulous album but I think it has found me at the right time. I struggle to choose favs off the album but as of recently, Femininomenon, My Kink is Karma, California, Pink Pony Club, and Casual. But I love all the songs truly. <3
One of Wun - Gunna
YUH. YUH. This album is a whole bop. Honestly didn’t realize how much I’ve listened to Gunna before this year. My favorite right now is Neck on a Yacht, my favorite walking-to-class tune
Brat - Charli XCX
I’m ready to go to the damn club to listen to this. Sympathy is a Knife that deserves a medal. This album is everything I need from a pop album, drama, angst, heartbreak. It’s a BRAT girl summer!
That’s it for this week, a long one but a good one! I will see you soon!
Love you always,
Ya, Little Mama <3
